MISSION STATEMENT
MANAGING WATER RESOURCES FOR EXISTING AND FUTURE GENERATIONS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Located in southeast King County, just 45 minutes south of Seattle, Washington, Covington Water District has a service area of approximately 53 square miles and provides water to the cities of Covington, Maple Valley, and Black Diamond, as well as unincorporated areas of King County. The District has experienced rapid growth and expects that development activity will remain brisk for the remainder of this decade.
With Flaming Geyser Park, Kanasket and Lake Wilderness State Parks, the area is noted for is many recreational amenities. Only 45 minutes away, the Cascade Mountains offer skiing, hiking and other outdoor opportunities. The scenic Green River generally defines the southern service area boundary and is noted for its excellent fishing and white water rafting.
Several fine golf courses are located within the District. Its close proximity to Seattle brings the full menu of cultural opportunities. The District is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners. Covington Water District has a reputation for customer service and progressive management practices.
SUPPLY, STORAGE & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
The District's primary water supply comes from 9 production wells located at two well-field sites. The District has 18 million gallons of storage in ground level steel tanks at 5 sites and 210 miles of pipeline.
The District is a “Charter Partner” in the City of Tacoma's Second Supply Project and began receiving supply in 2002. By 2007 the District will be able to take up to 12.5 million gallons per day from this surface water supply.
Covington Water District also has an agreement with the City of Auburn, which provides for the purchase of up to 2.5 million gallons of water per day. A new regional entity, the Cascade Water Alliance, will eventually provide additional sources of supply.
