Green River Fish Passage Project Gains Momentum

Home Posted on February 13, 2026

Covington Water District is excited to share encouraging news about long‑awaited progress on the **Howard A. Hanson Dam fish passage project**, a major step toward restoring salmon access to more than 100 miles of upstream habitat on the Green River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has highlighted this effort as essential for both salmon recovery and the long‑term health of our regional water supply, which serves Tacoma, Covington, and neighboring communities.  With new federal investments and ongoing design work, early project activity could begin as soon as this summer.

For Covington Water District customers, this project supports a healthier, more resilient watershed, strengthens regional water reliability, and reflects our commitment to responsible stewardship of the Green River—our shared source of clean drinking water.

We look forward to continued partnership with Tacoma Public Utilities, tribal governments, and regional agencies as this important work moves forward.
